The Cohens & The Kellys

  • Barbican Cinema Silk Street London, England, EC2Y United Kingdom (map)

108 mins / Dir: Harry Pollard / PG

The Cohens and Kellys (1926) is a lively ethnic comedy of feuding Irish and Jewish families in 1920s New York. The film is filled with stock characters played with great comic flair by a remarkable cast in their prime – the hard-working Jewish storekeeper (George Sidney), his anxious wife (Vera Gordon), the pugnacious Irish cop (Charlie Murray), and his feisty but warm-hearted wife (Cork-born Kate Price). It is a film that generously lives up to its promotional tagline – “An Uproarious Knockout! — A Thousand Laughs!” lt is hilarious, warm, and timelessly entertaining.

Multi-award-winning Irish accordionist Dermot Dunne and saxophonist Nick Roth, Artistic Director of the Yurodny Ensemble, will lead a quartet to accompany the film with a score drawing lavishly on Irish and Jewish folk music traditions.
