Brexit and the Border Issue

  • Regent Street Cinema 307 Regent Street London, England, W1B 2HW United Kingdom (map)

Brexit is the impending withdrawal of the United Kingdom from the European Union. It follows from the referendum of 23 June 2016, when a majority of 52% of British voters supported leaving the EU. On 29 March 2017, the UK government invoked Article 50 of the Treaty on European Union. The UK is due to leave the EU on 29 March 2019 at 11 pm UK time, when the period for negotiating a withdrawal agreement will end.

One of the major issues in the negotiations on the Brexit Withdrawal Agreement is the land border between Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland. There is concern about whether the border will become a “hard border” with customs and passport checks, and whether this could affect the 1998 Good Friday Agreement that was seen as instrumental in bringing peace to Northern Ireland. In order to prevent this, the EU proposed a “backstop agreement” within the Withdrawal Agreement that would put Northern Ireland under a range of EU rules.

In this event we will screen a selection of short films on the topic, including those listed below, and welcome filmmakers including directors Juliet Riddell, Grace Sweeney and Tom Collins to join us in discussing Brexit and the Border Issue.
