About our Practical Filmmaking course

Delivered by professional filmmaker and creative storyteller Shane Collins, this course provides a solid introduction to using film as a creative storytelling tool. With access to high end professional camera, sound and editing equipment, participants can expect to learn core visual storytelling tools from an established filmmaker.

Sessions will be held at Brunel University, in Uxbridge, West London

Scholarship Programme

Irish Film London and Brunel University London are offering four full fee waivers to encourage students to apply who are from under-represented groups in both the film industry and in higher education. This may include, but is certainly not limited to, students from lower income households, students from an area ranked in quantile 1 of the government’s Index of Multiple Deprivation (you can check if your postcode is eligible here), students with disability and or/a long term health issue, Black and ethnic minority groups, students from lesser represented demographics such as the LGBTQ+ community, those from a Gypsy, Roma or Traveller background.

    Lecture: Intro to Film Studies

    Saturday 1st July 10-1pm

    Practical Session 1: Ideation and Creative Project Development

    • Narrative structures

    • Idea development

    • Characters

    • What does a director do?

    • Storytelling through direction

    Week Two

    Friday 7th July 10-1pm

    Technical Session: Intro to Cameras

    Saturday 8th July 10-1pm

    Practical Session 2: Basic Cinematography

    • Basics of framing shots

    • Practice filming and framing shots

    • Chosen Stories presented to class

    • Locations picked

    • Cast and crew chosen

    Week Three

    Friday 14th July 10-1pm

    Technical Session: Intro to Sound

    Saturday 15th July 10-1pm

    Practical Session 3: Using Sound

    • Exploring dialogue, foley, SFX, music

    • Filming productions

    Week Four

    Friday 21st 10-1pm

    Tecnical Session : Intro to Editing

    Saturday 22nd 10-1pm

    Practical Session 4: Edit Assembly and Shooting Pickups

    • Editing 101 - starting to edit your film

    • Shooting any pickups identified

    Week Five

    Friday 28th July 10-1pm

    Technical Session : Editing Your Productions

    • Basic technical edit support - continued from week 4

    Saturday 29th July 10-1pm

    Practical Session 5: Picture Lock and Export

    • Final editing of footage.

    Saturday 29th July 2-5pm

    Final Practical Session: Showcase of work

    • Write a presentation about the filmmaking process.

    • Final overview / having a career as a storyteller (Commercial vs. Artistic)

    • Promoting your stories. (Festivals vs. Online)

    • Screening of Films - friends and family invited

    • Certificates given

    • Group photograph taken

  • WHERE AND WHEN

    All sessions will take place on campus at Brunel University, Uxbridge, between Friday 30th June and Sat 29th July.

    Technical sessions to help you learn how to use the university’s professional filmmaking equipment will take place on Fridays between 10am and 1pm

    Practical sessions exploring the creative side of filmmaking will take place Saturdays between 10am and 1pm

    A final showcase session will take place on Sat 29th July from 2pm to 5pm where you can invite your friends and family to see the work you’ve created.

    HOW TO APPLY

    Expressions of Interest must be made via the e-form below. The form takes approx 10 minutes to complete, but you may want to prepare answers to some of the more involved questions in advance. These questions are:

    • why are you interested in applying for this course?

    • what story would you like to tell using film?

    COURSE FEES AND SCHOLARSHIPS

    If selected, a course fee of £200 will be payable before the start of the course.

    Some scholarships are available (see above for info) which will act as full-fee waivers for successful applicants. To gain a scholarship you must provide specific info within the e-form demonstrating that you meet the requirements of the scholarship programme.
