Kevin Roche: The Quiet Architect is a biographical profile of the enigmatic Pritzker Prize winning Irish-American architect who was still working up to the age of 96. He sadly passed away this year.
Director Mark Noonan (You’re Ugly Too) takes a highly creative multi-layered approach to the subject examining Roche’s life and work in the context of many key architectural questions. The film combines Roche’s personal reflections and philosophy (that "the responsibility of the modern architect is to create a community for a modern society,” which emphasises the importance for peoples’ well-being to bring nature into the buildings they inhabit), with highly cinematic representations of his architecture courtesy of award-winning DoP Kate McCullough, to create a uniquely poetic visual portrait.
Some of Roche's best known work includes the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York which he has worked on for almost 50 years, the revolutionary Oakland Museum of California, the Ford Foundation and United Nations Plaza in Manhattan, A Centre For the Arts at the Wesleyan University, corporate campuses for Bouygues in Paris and Banco Santander in Madrid. His only Irish building, the Convention Centre Dublin went through a lengthy stop-start planning process but finally got the go ahead and opened in 2010.
